Being stricken with a disease such as cancer is devastating to any person, but it is especially saddening when it happens to a child. For this reason, members of the trucking community have gone to great lengths to help sick kids and their families make it through the most difficult of times. Recently, trucking company Averitt Express donated over $388,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, completing its $1.5 million endowment for the hospital’s Leukemia and Lymphoma Clinic.

At the fourth annual Palm Dinner in Nashville on September 18, the Cookeville, Tennessee-based trucking company presented its donation check on behalf of its employee giving program, Averitt Cares. The program is 100 percent funded by Averitt employees and has raised nearly $2 million since it was created in 1990. In July 1997, the company announced it would donate $1.5 million to St. Jude to help fund the hospital’s Leukemia and Lymphoma Clinic. Contribution to Averitt Cares has always been voluntary for employees.

Country music artist Billy Dean, along with Averitt President and CEO Gary Sasser, were on hand to present the donation, but it wasn’t Dean that left Sasser singing praises. “Our associates have always been compassionate, giving people, and they were thrilled with the opportunity to fund the St. Jude Leukemia and Lymphoma Clinic, knowing how many lives it would touch in a positive way,” Sasser explained. “It is an honor to support the kids and families of St. Jude.”

The trucking community has always worked hard to donate both time and money to various charitable organizations, ranging from hospitals to foundations to scholarship funds. Averitt Express and its Averitt Cares program continues to bring help and hope to sick children and their families at St. Jude and continues to show the trucking industry’s dedication to helping those in need.

St. Jude, based in Memphis, Tennessee, is a hospital specially created for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. For more information about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, visit www.stjude.org.
